SHOPGATE 2010
I suppose you could say I’ve taken my resolutions a little far.
I’m creating a bit of a scandal in my life. What about I’m to commit to is the bravest, most daring little ditty I’ve ever devised.
I am not purchasing anything but gas, food, utilities, and health-related necessities (like real necessities, not new suede pumps) until July 3, 2010. Six months of pure retail fasting.
Seriously. I bought a pair of gym pants on January 3, and that’s it until summer. This is a test of self control and dedication to my savings account.
The rules:
- Food includes groceries and nights out, but there’s a strict budget in place: I’m not about to replace retail therapy with luxurious meals out.
- No clothes means no clothes, no accessories, no shoes, no fun. Kidding! Little makeup and beauty staples, including maintenance (a haircut) are ok as long as they’re in the budget. I’m not getting frumpy, but frivolous things like manicures are out.
- The one exception to the shopping ban is March 26. My birthday deserves a special treat (TBD). If I’ve followed my plan, I’ll have saved enough for my first big-girl reward (which is so awesome, I won’t need to own anything else, ever, regardless).
- I can buy gifts for others for special occasions. I refuse to turn into Scrooge, and I’ve got a few big birthdays on the horizon this month and the next.
- Utilities includes fixed monthly expenses that I’m already paying and/or have already planned for, including gym memberships and training. I cannot add anything else to the list, including more training sessions, etc., unless it’s a true expense (fill the oil tank, yes, but no monthly facials).
Basically, NO STUFF. This is going to be tough, but since my e-cleanse I’ve taken a good look around and realized I don’t need anything. It’s time to prioritize.
Why am I telling you? I love to shop. This isn’t something I can do on my own. By sharing, I know I’ve got a few hundred people holding me accountable.
Think you’ve got what it takes? Join me!
Shoot me an email and we can even engage in retail withdrawal group e-therapy.
