Tonight, my roommate and I decided that we needed something sweet after dinner. I dove face first into a box of Pop-tarts and Jess got to work on some Thin Mints we had lurking in the freezer. While devoring S’mores Pop-tarts, Jess and I got in a heated discussion about how annoying it is when companies package more then one serving into individual packages (obviously I eat both Pop-tarts).
As Jess made her way through the second sleeve of Thin Mints, I started getting really mad. It’s true! Why put two Poptarts in a single sleeve if you’re only supposed to eat one! GAH! So I thought I’d share a list of the worst foods packaged in double serving sizes  (aka foods packaged to guarantee you eat multiple servings).
- Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups (does ANYONE eat just one??)
- Pop tarts
- All Hostess products (Twinkies! Swiss Rolls! Coffee Cakes!)
- Mini bags of chips
- Sleeves of nuts
- Gatorade/lots of “individually” bottled drinks
- the 99 cent bags of gummy candies at CVS (you really think I’m stopping at 3 peach rings?)
Seriously this should be illegal! I’m bringing it to Congress! I mean how do companies get away with this? By saying we should have “self control” or something? HA. They’ve obviously never seen ME around a Reese’s…
On a serious note, however, obesity rates continued to climb in 23 states last year (via). Kids especially aren’t conscious enough about portion sizes to know that even though there are two Pop-tarts in every sleeve, they should only have one. I’M not even conscious enough to think about that, and I’m a very health-conscious 23-year old.
I think it’s crazy that AT&T can sue Verizon for “misleading advertising” but food giants can legally mislead Americans into consuming twice what they should. Clearly so that you eat more, and they make more money.
Hmmm. Food for thought..
