The website Managing Editor of our local NBC affiliate also presented at the conference today. They have developed a really innovative approach to online news. The top headline is generated by user votes, and each story has at least one interactive feature.
It seems like nationally they are sort of pioneering the user-generated news model by turning their local websites into their own social platform, instead of relying solely on social media tools independent of their web site (Facebook, etc.) like their competitors.
They seem to also have a new presence on tumblr…
It was really interesting to see how they are using the new communication model to their benefit, instead of whining and crumbling like many other major news organizations. It was also impressive that the initiative is coming from NBC Universal but is rolling out via their local stations- i.e. staying personal, which seems to be the secret for suceeding in social media.
Bravo, NBC. I’m excited to see where this goes.
