I remember, in 7th grade (when we learned about the Holocaust) our teachers would end every exam, essay, presentation, video… with the question “Why is it important for us to learn about this?”

And we’d always answer so obviously, “So we never forget, so that it never ever happens again.”

I would always wonder why they asked such an obvious question…but as I’ve gotten older, I get it. Because I haven’t forgotten. And I always remember being asked that question every time I see the cover of Night in the bookstore or someone’s photos of Anne Frank’s house on Facebook, or my friend Michelle singing in Hebrew to her grandfather in the hospital, himself a survivor.

Never forget.
