Many people don’t know that Connecticut is home to 19 vineyards and wineries, encompassing over 1500 acres of open land. The climate here is surprising mild for many grape varieties, including Cabernet, Reisling, Merlot, and many others.
Winemaking started in Connecticut after the passing of the Connecticut Winery Act in 1978. Although these vineyards are young compared to the ancient vines of France and Italy, they make some really great, award-winning wines.
You can a tour of Connecticut’s wine trail and taste some of our state’s finest. For those of you in NYC looking for a weekend getaway, the Western part of Connecticut boasts a hefty portion of the trail.
I haven’t taken the trail yet, but this weekend I am excited to go to the Connecticut Wine Festival in Goshen, Connecticut. For $25, you get 20 tasting tickets, a wine glass, and a tote bag (who doesn’t love swag?).
The deets:
Connecticut Wine Festival
Sat. August 1, 12 - 7 pm
Sun. August 2, 12 - 6 pm
Goshen Fair Grounds
116 Old Middle Street
Goshen, Conn. 06756
$25 general admission, $40 weekend pass, $10 under 21 and designated drivers
And the best part? Connecticut farm wineries are permitted to sell wine on Sundays!
