Twitter followers- following to be followed?

I have noticed that as Twitter’s popularity has increased (ok, SKYROCKETED), something insanely annoying has happened- many new users are completely obsessed with amassing as many followers as possible. Their mantra seems to be “I follow you, then you follow me!”

It sort of reminds me of that moment in high school where all my girlfriends finally realized we had been swapping $20 bills with each other for birthdays for years. What’s the point? Keep your money! Let’s get dinner together- something of real value.

My question for these twitterers is, then what? Some of these people have over 4,000 followers, and are following around the same. But they are saying. nothing. They tweet about their “social media business” techniques, at best. The same ones I could pull from nearly any mainstream social media blog most twitter users read daily. Err if you are practicing what you’re preaching, I wouldn’t call it a success. What is the purpose? And who are they talking to? Definitely not me.

End of story: I think Twitter is a fantastic tool, when it’s used correctly, and you are actually gaining or sharing value. Or hey, at least be interesting! I’d rather hear what these people have for lunch every day then the nonsense they tweet about…
